"The King Island Journal"

King Island Journal

Our Price: $29.95 + Shipping

This fascinating hard cover book tells the story of Rie and husband Juan's life on this tiny, remote island in the Bering Sea while teaching school there in 1951 and 1952.

Rie says it was like being taken back to some ancient civilization; and the National Trust for Historic Preservation last year put King Island on its list of America's eleven (11) most endangered places (See Jan-Feb 2006 issue of Preservation magazine.) It is one of the last remaining examples of Inupiat Eskimo architecture and way of life.

Native islanders, who have now been taken off the island, say it was a "paradise" even though to most it looks like a forbidding place.

This beautiful 151 page book is profusely illustrated by photographs taken by Juan and the narrative that accompanies the pictures makes for informative, pleasant reading.

"For the first time it really began to hit home just how far removed we were. As we got closer to King Island and the village began to come into view, it seemed as if we were being taken back through the years to some ancient civilization. It looked for the world like the picture the history books describe of the dwellings of prehistoric man." Rie Munoz

"King Island Christmas"

King Island Christmas

Our Price: $9.95 + Shipping

"Winter is closing in on Alaska's King Island, and soon the Eskimo villagers will be cut off from the world for many months. That suits them just fine--but only if they can first brave a rough and windy sea to fetch the new priest in time for Christmas".

"That mysterious thing, the spirit of Christmas, is brought heartily to life. Jean Rogers tells the story with affection and witty simplicity. Rie Munoz brings to her stylized pictures a knowledge stored up during a year spent as a teacher on the island in the Bering Sea"--says the New York Times.

"A beautifully designed book to enjoy at any time of the year."--says The Horn Book.
